Stay private on Telegram

Telegram gives you serious control over your privacy — from encryption to granular settings. This guide explains how it protects your data and the steps you can take to lock things down further.

How Telegram encryption works

Every connection to Telegram is secured with its MTProto protocol, which encrypts data between your device and the servers. Cloud chats are encrypted in transit and at rest and distributed across data centres, so no single location holds a readable copy.

Secret chats and end-to-end encryption

For your most sensitive conversations, secret chats add end-to-end encryption: only you and the recipient can read them, they never touch the cloud, and they support self-destruct timers. They're tied to the specific device you started them on.

Protecting your account

The single most important step is enabling two-step verification. Pair it with a passcode and biometric lock and your account stays safe even if your phone is lost or your SMS is intercepted. Ready to set it up? Start by installing the app from the download center.
